Choosing the right shoes for your wedding

Shoes, shoes, shoes; they can be the perfect touch to your perfect bridal outfit, or end up seeming out of place and be the catalyst for making your dream day one of the most uncomfortable ones... but not to worry, here are a few great tips to guide you towards your dream pair for your special day.

Purchase your dress first

For the shoe obsessed ladies out there, it may seem like a good idea to buy that pair of Jimmy Choo or Giuseppe Zanotti that you have always wanted so you could parade them on your big day (and the many many days after your wedding). Although we recommend you to purchase a pair that you can wear again after the wedding, but never purchase the shoes before your dress...just don't jump the gun here - dress first, shoes second!

Colour

It is important to choose the right shade of shoes to complement your gown. The more popular option would be to match it with the same colour as your dress. However, choosing contrasting colours to match accessories or other adornments can also be just as elegant. Don’t be afraid to choose rich colours or going for black (it’s the current trend to match black shoes with light dresses). Metallic shoes are also a popular and trendy high fashion choice, and are perfect for adding a little sparkle to a minimalistic gown.

Heel height

The higher the heel, the more forward your body weight will be and the more pressure that will be on the front of your feet (i.e. the more uncomfortable it will be). Try wearing shoes of different heel heights for long hours beforehand to make sure they won’t be bothering you on your dream day. Ladies, don't forget your man! You may also want to consider the height of your partner in making a judgement of the perfect heel size.

When it comes to the shape of the heel, you may have personal preferences over which look you prefer. Comfort wise, wedges and thicker heels will distribute your weight much more evenly compared to stilettos and offer better stability - think garden ceremonies, red carpet, uneven surfaces. If heel height is important, shop for heels with a high platform at the front, this can be much more comfortable as they increase the overall height of the shoes rather than just the heel preventing too much pressure being applied to the front.

Material

Softer materials such as silk or satin (which are both easy to match to your dress) are usually more comfortable as they are less prone to digging into your skin (painful!). Be careful with more rigid materials such as plastic or vinyl (and sometimes even patent leather) as a bad fit can be unforgiving.  Additionally, take some precaution when choosing shoes with lace or other embellishments which may get caught with your dress. If in doubt, standard leather shoes are always a very reliable choice.

Cushioning

The padding of the soles can greatly determine the comfort of your shoes. If you feel there isn't enough, try experimenting with inserts beforehand to see if it can help, though they may be hard to hide if you're wearing sandals.

Choosing the right pair of shoes may be just as hard as choosing the right dress; make sure that it’s not only beautiful but relatively comfortable as well, and represents who you are. As an added precaution, have back-ups; bring another pair or two just in case, or ones with lower heels for dancing. Also, don't forget about the venue of your wedding when choosing; stilettos may not be the best idea for beach weddings. You may also want to break into your shoes beforehand or walk around in them for a while to get used to them. Relax and enjoy choosing your perfect pair of shoes, good luck!

Floral ideas for Chinese & Cultural Weddings

WeddingFlowerIdeas

Flowers not only add a touch of freshness and life to any wedding, but they also carry special values and meanings within the Chinese culture. Wedding decorations can become tricky when the two families come from different cultures. Floral decorations are an ideal way to get around this; you can mix and match them as freely as you like to represent many cultures at once. Hence, they’re not only perfect for traditional Chinese weddings, but also for the cultural weddings like Chinese-Australian weddings, or even just western style Chinese weddings. Below are a few tips and ideas on choosing the right flowers for Chinese influenced weddings.

Colour

Though it can vary from flower to flower, traditionally, red is often associated with prosperity and fortune, while pink symbolizes love. Hence, these two colours are a popular and safe choice for both white gowned and traditional Chinese weddings.

Although white flowers are also popular, they can be controversial as well; it’s best to consult both parties on their views. (Even when the parents don’t seem to care much, just double check…just in case!) Traditionally, white was mainly used in funerals as it is often associated with death. However, today, many Chinese brides already wear white dresses, thus white flowers may be acceptable especially in western style weddings.

Different types of gorgeous flowers  and their meanings

The Orchid

Orchids are a popular modern pick; a symbol of love, fertility and a married couple. They are also sometimes associated with fortune and wealth. Moreover, Moth Orchids can especially represent the pure and sincere bond between a loving couple.

The Lily

Lilies are also a popular Chinese choice. Not only are they often associated with a happy union and purity, they’re also a symbol of the feminine eternal; the beauty of a young lady, and the grace of a mother. Additionally, yellow lilies can represent joyfulness.

The Lotus Flower

Lotus flowers are also suitable especially for your more oriental weddings. With leaves still attached to the bud, it can represent a complete union whilst also being associated with love, virtue, and purity. They’re also great at adding an oriental touch to Asian themed weddings.

Rose

When in doubt about floral decorations for cultural weddings, roses are most likely the best choice. They’re probably the most universally used flowers in weddings (including in Chinese weddings).  Red roses can be a powerful symbol of deep and sincere love in both Western and Asian cultures.

For a greater hint of the orient, the China Rose (Rosa chinensis) can be the perfect choice with a variety that opens as a pale pink that later develops into a deep red; an embodiment of the ever growing and transforming notion of true love within a marriage.

Of course these are only a few suggestions of flowers that can be used in Chinese/cultural; there are many more varieties to choose from. Most of the flowers mentioned are great for cultural weddings due to their culturally neutral nature (such as with roses). Keeping in mind a colour theme that you may already have in place for your wedding, you should consult a professional florist before deciding to make sure the floral decorations will be in perfect bloom on your perfect day!
